Pond Cleaning

Normally, organic material in water is broken down quickly by bacteria and used in the natural processes of the aquatic environment. If the amount of organic matter entering water is greater than the amount that can be broken down, it will accumulate on the lake, river or canal bed, forming deep layers of organic silt.

The lower layers of silt on the bed of the water-body may become anoxic (contain no oxygen) due to bacterial action, appearing black in colour and having a characteristic foul smell, and large-scale disturbance of this deep silt can result in sudden and catastrophic de-oxygenation.

Siltex

Siltex has been one of the great revelations in water management and is probably the most efficient method of controlling organic silt. Siltex can be used on its own to reduce organic silt or as a natural partner to our algae control units, in such cases Siltex is applied around the same time as the algae killer is installed, this ensures that the resulting dead algae is consumed naturally and quickly.

Siltex is a highly porous form of Calcium Carbonate consisting of microscopic particles with an average size of less than 5 microns (5 thousands of a millimetre). Being Calcium Carbonate, Siltex is harmless to plants and animals.

Odours are caused by the bio-degrading of fish and waterfowl faeces, algae, rotting weed, and rotting leaf litter. As these rot and fester in the water they produce methane gas, which causes an unpleasant smell. By boosting the aerobic bacteria and micro-organisms the smell disappears. Other Benefits include:

  • Decreases organic and oxidisable matter, which shows as a reduction in silt levels.
  • Increases oxygenation by stimulation of aerobic micro-organisms.
  • Improves water clarity by settling suspended solids.
  • Reduces methane production by silt body
  • Counteracts acidity in water and silt.
  • Provides essential calcium for plants and animals
  • Increases biodiversity within waterbodies .

Siltex is harmless to humans, mammals, birds, fish, invertebrates and water plants * . If used in garden ponds it will cause no harm to pets drinking the water.

*Siltex can be harmful to nuisance algae and blanketweed.

Siltex should always be applied to the whole water body and not just the worst affected parts. In ideal conditions and when applied correctly and in correct quantities, Siltex can remove as much as 8 – 10 inches of silt annually.

De-silting

We offer a complete de-silting service tailored to your individual requirements and expectations and can also advise and construct systems to reduce silt building up in the future.

Using both our own staff and on larger jobs specialised contractors we are able to offer an efficient quality service that will revitalise your water. Using modern machines and skilled operators we can find a way to de-silt almost any water.

If you have a pond or lake that requires de-silting please call us to discuss the matter further, as waters vary so greatly we are unable to offer a standardised pricing and procedure on our website, because of this we will visit the water that requires the work and discuss with you your expectations of the finished result, once this has been completed we will offer you a quotation.

Pond Cleaning

Many garden ponds can quickly become an overgrown, muddy eyesore without proper cleaning and maintenance. As many people have neither the time nor equipment to clean their pond, this can quickly become an overlooked feature of a garden or estate.

We are well equipped to clean and restore your pond back to a beautiful feature and focal point; we can also offer equipment and advice on pond care to ensure that once it is clean it will stay in good condition.

If you have a pond or water feature you would like to have cleaned please call us to discuss your requirements, as all ponds are different we tailor each job to the client’s wishes and aspirations.
